2010-11 Study Guide
We're
very excited to announce that the Music Listening Contest is producing a new
Study Guide this year which
will be written by
Dr. Matthew Bribitzer-Stull, associate professor in theory and
composition at the University of Minnesota. A
unique aspect of this year's guide is that it will feature works
from local ensembles' 2010-2011 programs, including the Minnesota
Orchestra. In addition, the three repertoire compact discs will be narrated by Minnesota
Public Radio personality
Melissa Ousely.
2010-11 Study Guide Themes
Featured composer: Béla Bartók
Featured genre: Song
Featured ethnomusic: Indian Carnatic
Study Guide Information
The Study Guide is designed to provide historical and stylistic insights into the compositions the students will hear on the compact disks. It includes general information about the composers and analyses of the compositions themselves. Timelines and references provide historical contexts for each composition.
The music presented on the compact disks and in the Study Guide represents a broad selection of music from the Ancient World to the end of the 20th Century. The musical examples on the compact disks are commercially available recordings that feature professional musicians. The examples are imbedded with voiceovers to point out specific aspects of the piece.
