College Bowl Information
The
top two teams that emerge from the first five rounds of the State
Competition will then immediately participate in an exciting
College-Bowl round to determine the final winner of the State
Contest. It is an open-buzzer team competition, featuring questions
on Study Guide material and listening samples that may or may not be
from the Study Guide CDs. There are five categories of questions
with five questions (with point values of 100-500) in each category. Students may briefly confer
with each other, but answers must be given within 10 seconds of
buzzing in.
Scoring:
A team is awarded 100-500 points for each correct answer.
A team is deducted 100-500 points for each incorrect answer or for buzzing
in and failing to answer the question.
No points are awarded or deducted if no one buzzes in to answer the question.
Procedure:
A coin toss determines which team will choose the first question
(any of five questions, with point values of 100, 200, 300, 400, or
500 in any one of five categories). The emcee then reads the question
as it is displayed.
Team members may buzz in at any time before, during, or after the
question is read.
If no one on either team buzzes in within 10 seconds after reading
the question, the emcee will read the answer and the team will
choose another question. No points are awarded or deducted.
If a team member buzzes in, that team must answer within 10 seconds.
If the team answers correctly, the team is awarded the point total (from 100-500 points).
If the team does not answer or answers incorrectly, the team loses the point total (from 100-500 points). The emcee will then ask the opposing team if they would like to answer the question. The opposing team will have 10 seconds to buzz in and give an answer to the question.
If the team buzzes in and answers correctly, the point total
(100-500) is awarded.
If the team does not buzz in, the answer is given and no points are awarded.
If the team buzzes in and does not
answer or answers incorrectly, the point total (100-500) is deducted.
The last team to correctly answer a question chooses the next
question.
Time will be called after 15 minutes.
In the event of a tie at the end of the College Bowl competition, a
sudden-death tie-breaker question will be read or a listening
excerpt will be played. The first team to buzz in and answer the
question correctly in 10 seconds wins.
